It is with great excitement and thankfulness to God that we introduce to you our next rector, Fr. Sammy Wood.
Fr. Sammy Wood and his wife Reneé were both raised in Mississippi, where Sammy did his undergraduate work at Mississippi State before completing law school at Ole Miss. After they married, Sammy and Reneé left Mississippi for New England in 2000 where Sammy received his M. Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a post-graduate diploma in Anglican Studies from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Most recently, Sammy has served for the past eight years as Assistant to the Rector and Associate Rector at Church of the Advent in Boston, MA. Fr Sammy and Renee will be moving to Nashville with their three children, Elizabeth, 9th grade Patrick, 7th grade, and Flannery, 4th grade. Read the complete bio, here.
Sixteen months ago we started our search process and after much time, prayer, and long conversations God has led us to call Fr. Sammy to our church. A great deal of thanks goes out to Joe Flynn and the search committee for sending us four excellent candidates to interview here in Nashville. Their work was nothing less than remarkable. We also need to express our deep gratitude to the staff of St. B’s who listened well, asked hard questions, and rolled out the red carpet for our candidates. They are a very significant reason that St. B’s is a place that attracted so many excellent candidates.
During the entire search process, the Vestry was continually given the image of a shepherd when we imagined what St. B’s needed in our next rector. As we read about Fr. Sammy, interviewed him, and then discerned about him he rose in our minds as the shepherd that God was calling to our church. He is a prayerful and thoughtful man who is committed to his family and the work God is calling him to do as a rector. We look forward to seeing the growth of St. B’s and Fr. Sammy become intertwined in a way which will challenge us all to see God’s plan play out for our community.
Fr. Sammy will officially join us in November and we already have a transition team –led by Bev Mahan – preparing the way for the Wood’s arrival and adjustment into our community. As their arrival nears you can expect updates with new information and dates for special events.
Continue to pray for the Woods as they begin the bittersweet process of saying goodbye to their home and friends in Boston, and making the exciting transition to Nashville and their life in our community.
